Helen M. (Lantto) Waack, 92, a resident of Arbor Green, Houghton, and former Atlantic Mine resident, died on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at the Omega House.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., on March 14, 1919, a daughter to the late James and Helen (Gieseking) McFarland and graduated from the Clarenceville High School in Farmington, Mich.
On June 24, 1944, Helen was married to William Lantto in Farmington. After moving to Atlantic Mine, the couple owned and operated Lantto’s Grocery there from 1950 to 1974. Bill preceded Helen in death on December 2, 1990. She later married Edwin Waack, Sr., on September 22, 1997, in Lebanon, Ohio. The couple resided in Lake, Mich., and following Edwin’s death on October 3, 2004, Helen returned to the area.
Helen attended Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Atlantic Mine. She was a charter member of the Range Snowmobile Club of Atlantic Mine.
Helen and her husband, Bill enjoyed spending time of their 25 ft. cabin cruiser, the Laurie Dee, which Helen was known to be the captain of the boat. She also enjoyed going to flee markets and rummage sales and was famous for her cinnamon rolls.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Jeanne Lantto of Atlantic Mine; four grandchildren, Laurie (Lucas) Barrette of Marquette, Denise Lantto of Lake Linden and her fiancé David Dairo, Sherry (Brian) Lassila of Traprock,Angela (Russell) DuFay of Marquette; four great-grandchildren, Cole and Morgan Lassila and Andrew and Sarah DuFay; a step-son, Edward H. (Linda) Waack, Jr.; nieces and nephews, Michelle Oras, Chip Meyrelles, Patty Flack, Ted Wisti, Gordon Wisti, Marion Brown, Michael Wisti, Ruth Wisti, wife of the late Andrew Wisti, Mark, Dan, Eric and John Wisti; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Murto of Canton. Helen was known as a second Mom through out the years to many people including Joanne Soukas. Besides her parents and husbands, Helen was also preceded in death by a sister, Pat Meyrelles and a brother, Dietrich McFarland.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at the Mountain View Mortuary, 14 Seventh St., South Range, with Pastor Bucky Beach to officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday at the mortuary. Spring burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.
